How to use it

  1. Open Gas Tracker. Load the tool and scan Low, Avg, and High for each supported network.
  2. Check the Ethereum sample chart. Use recent ETH average samples to see whether fees are spiking or cooling.
  3. Compare L2 alternatives. If L1 is expensive, compare BNB, Polygon, and Arbitrum bands for the same action when the app supports those networks.
  4. Simulate in your wallet. Always run a wallet estimate before signing; oracles can differ from priority-fee markets.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Wallets may use EIP-1559 tips and private RPCs that disagree with the tracker
  • Public RPC eth_gasPrice bands are approximations
  • Chart samples are best-effort while the server instance is warm
  • L2 “cheap” still moves with demand during airdrop rushes

What Low, Avg, and High mean here

Ethereum prefers Etherscan gasoracle when an API key is configured; otherwise Blockscout stats fill in. Other chains use public RPC eth_gasPrice converted wei→gwei with simple bands around the average. Treat bands as a triage tool, not a precise maxFeePerGas recommendation.

If Low and High are far apart, the network is contested. Non-urgent bridges often save more money by waiting than by paying the top of the band.

What to do when Ethereum gas spikes

NFT mints, memecoin launches, and busy settlement windows push average gwei up. Check whether your action can move to an L2 the destination app supports. Use the unit converter to translate gwei into an ETH cost for a known gas limit before you approve.
