How to use Capital Gains Estimator

Enter cost basis and disposal proceeds (and fees if you fold them in). Read illustrative gain or loss. Keep official lots elsewhere.

Example: selling crypto for a $5,000 gain

You bought crypto for $10,000 and sold it for $15,000. You assume a 15% tax rate.

  1. Gain = $15,000 − $10,000 = $5,000
  2. Estimated tax = $5,000 × 15% = $750
  3. After-tax gain = $5,000 − $750 = $4,250

Keep $14,250 of the $15,000 sale. Your real rate depends on your country and holding period, so use your own rate. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Formula & methodology

gain ≈ proceeds − basis (− fees you include). Not a full lot-matching engine.

Sketch crypto capital gains before tax software

A quick gain/loss sketch helps you see whether a disposal is material before you export CSVs. It is not a filing product.

Multi-wallet transfers, airdrops, and income events need proper tooling. When in doubt, talk to a tax professional.

Pair with the profit calculator for trade-level P&L that is still not tax advice.

All CryptonicTools utilities are free, mobile-first, and require no account.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tax software?+

No. It is an illustrative gain/loss sketch from cost basis and proceeds. Local rules, lots, and wash sales need a tax professional or dedicated software.

What inputs do I need?+

Typically buy cost (basis), sell proceeds, and any fees you want folded in. Multi-lot inventories are not fully modeled.

Does it cover every country?+

No. Rates and reporting differ by jurisdiction. Use it for education, then verify with local guidance.
